UK PM ‘a serious candidate’

When Tony Blair proposed creating a full-time European Union president in 2002, his aides whispered that this was an idea in which the UK prime minister had “a strong personal interest”.

They said the post would probably go to a former head of government who would become a high-profile political leader, the EU’s face in international affairs, and someone to blame if things went wrong.
