Sharp rise in British backing for EU

British support for the European Union has reached its highest level for more than a decade, just as French politicians fear that the club has become too Anglo-Saxon.

A new Europewide opinion poll shows that 42 per cent of Britons regard their country's membership of the EU to be "a good thing", compared with only 25 per cent six years ago.
