Ted Kennedy on Monday delivered the most ringing endorsement possible for Barack Obama’s presidential aspirations, capping a nightmare few days for the Clintons.

“I believe there is one candidate who has the extraordinary gifts of leadership and character matched to the extraordinary demands of this moment in history,” said Mr Kennedy, the torchbearer of the Kennedy dynasty.
