Whirlpool increases offer for Maytag

Whirlpool has increased its offer for Maytag, the troubled appliance maker, from $17 to $18 a share, in an attempt to thwart an agreed acquisition of Maytag by a private equity group led by Ripplewood Holdings.

Triton, the group led by Ripplewood, is offering $14 a share for the maker of Hoover vacuum cleaners.
