John Lewis eyes Christmas present

John Lewis, the high street retailer, is seeing signs promising a better Christmas than last year, as sales last week topped £78m - up 10 per cent year-on-year.

The news will provide a glimmer of optimism to counter the gloom wrought by October's 0.1 per cent decline in high street sales - the first fall in nine months.
