Thousands flee homes as huge tsunami aftershock hits Aceh

The strongest aftershock recorded since the Asian tsunami disaster shook Indonesia's already-devastated Aceh province last night with witnesses at the scene reporting thousands of people fleeing their homes.

The US geological survey estimated the earthquake at a magnitude of 8.2 with its epicentre 245km south-west of Medan, the provincial capital of north Sumatra. It said it struck at 11:09 pm local time.
