Perseverance pays off for eastern industry

Wolfgang Krüger spent many proud years making caustic soda in Bitterfeld, a centre for chemicals production in communist East Germany.

Twenty years ago, the pensioner recalls, thousands swarmed the streets as shifts changed at the two chemical complexes and the gaping open-cast mine that provided their energy. “The place was black with bodies. Today there’s no-one left.”
