A World Trade Organisation panel on Wednesday handed down a mixed verdict on a European Union complaint against alleged illegal subsidies to South Korean shipbuilders.

Trade diplomats said the confidential panel report largely rejected EU claims that the South Korean government had unfairly subsidised its shipbuilding industry - the world's biggest, with 44 per cent of ship construction orders last year.
