Brown ponders campaign spending cap

Gordon Brown is poised to impose tight caps on spending by the two main political parties that would drastically curtail a significant source of campaign funds for prospective Conservative candidates.

Senior ministers are examining how the government could shut a legal loophole that enables Lord Ashcroft, one of the Tories’ biggest financiers, to bankroll the campaigns of individual candidates in key marginal constituencies.
