Signalling: Europe-wide management system gets a cautious green light

When the history of the current changes to Europe’s railways comes to be written the bustling junction station of Olten, northern Switzerland, may play a surprisingly significant role.

Olten lies at one end of Swiss Federal Railways’ (SBB’s) 35km route to Lucerne, which in April 2002 became the first significant railway line to be operated solely using signalling based on the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS).
