For decades, the coat stand has been banished from stylish domestic spaces. The bent-wood version, first produced by Gebrueder Thonet in the early 1900s and snapped up by homeowners through the 1970s, all but disappeared from view in the 1990s as the minimalist mantra took hold.
But traipse through the giant halls of major fairs, such as Milan’s Salone del Mobile, Maison & Objet in Paris and Internationale Mobelmesse in Cologne and you’ll discover that attitudes are changing. The coat stand is coming back out of the closet.
