Banks and miners lift FTSE amid bad news for retailers

The retail sector missed out on the London market’s first gain in three days yesterday, with Marks and Spencer among the fallers.

Stocks were in retreat after the Office for National Statistics reported a much sharper-than-expected fall in retail sales for February.
