Ofgem 'must cut greenhouse gases'

Ofgem, the energy regulator, should reduce greenhouse gas emissions as a priority, according to a government-backed advisory group. If accepted by the government, the recommendation would force fundamental changes in the way energy companies do business.

The Sustainable Development Commission says in a report published on Wednesday that when Ofgem makes decisions on what energy companies can charge, it should take into account environmental criteria such as energy wastage and efforts to encourage efficiency.
