Fed cool on longer-term loans

The Federal Reserve is stepping up the volume of one-month loans it supplies directly and indirectly to banks in the US and Europe. Could longer-term operations be next? Possibly, but only if the current strategy appears not to work.

Many bankers would like the Fed to provide three-month loans as well as one-month funds. Yet the US central bank is unwilling to do so.
