Competition watchdog warns on intervention

Attempts to combat problems such as food supply shortages and energy insecurity will harm consumers if government and regulators inadvertently allow monopolies and cartels to emerge, the competition watchdog warns on Tuesday.

John Fingleton, chief executive of the Office of Fair Trading, said policymakers often failed to understand how their actions affected the long-term workings of markets.
