Portuguese opposition scents victory

José Socrates, the modern-ising new leader of Portugal's opposition Socialist party (PS), thinks a historic victory is within his grasp in the country's general election on Sunday.

Opinion polls forecast a comfortable victory for the PS over the two parties supporting the centre-right government of Pedro Santana Lopes, the conservative prime minister who took office only eight months ago.
