Korean flat-screen makers put rivalry on hold

There are no permanent foes or friends in the highly competitive flat-screen industry. Prodded by the government, South Korea’s Samsung and LG Group, long-time rivals, have agreed to join forces to stave off increasing competition from Japan and Taiwan.

The alliance between the leading flat-screen producers covers a wide range of areas including research and development, patent sharing, procurement of components and equipment, cross-purchasing of panels and adopting common industrial standards.
