Whitbread hotels hurt by leisure slowdown

Whitbread underscored the bleak outlook for the hotel sector after reporting a drop in group sales last quarter as fewer people stayed at its Premier Inn budget hotels.

In a sign that even companies with no-frill offerings are starting to feel the pinch of the recession, Whitbread said comparable sales across the group fell 1.5 per cent in the 11 weeks to February 12.
