Gloom in the financial sector cast a shadow over the wider European market, as banking stocks lost further ground.

The FTSE Eurofirst 300 sank for the third consecutive day on Friday dropping 1.8 per cent to 1,222.51 to a 14-week closing low and bringing its losses for the week to 3.5 per cent.
