George Osborne, shadow chancellor, yesterday said the government should follow the US lead and prepare more actively to help homeowners facing mortgage problems, writes George Parker .

Mr Osborne, on a visit to New York to discuss the US response to the credit crunch, said ministers should work with banks to ensure homeowners moving off fixed-rate mortgages were warned about looming increases in payments and offered financial advice.
