Toyota and GM are neck and neck in the race to be number one

The post-mortems that were being prepared on General Motors' 77-year dominance of the global car industry had to be shelved yesterday.

The release of the carmaker's 2007 figures was expected to show that Toyota, which has been had been growing its global business at GM's expense for years, had stolen its US rival's title as the world's number one carmaker.
