The European Commission yesterday said the arrests by France of the co-chief executives of Bwin, the Austrian online gambling company, almost certainly fall foul of European law.

As the online gambling sector still tries to come to terms with the impact of the arrests of UK executives in the US, it is hoping the Commission will stiffen its resolve against member states intent on protecting their state-run gambling monopolies.
