SBC and AT&T set to finalise merger

The boards of AT&T and SBC Communications were meeting yesterday to approve a $16bn merger that would create the largest telecoms company in the US and end AT&T's 120-year history of independence.

Executives of both companies had already held extensive discussions about the terms, and board approval was considered extremely likely, with an announcement expected as early as today, said people familiar with the talks.
