What IT means to me: Being lifelike makes the virtual world so compelling

There is something instantly likeable about Philip Rosedale, the man behind Second Life, the avatar-populated virtual internet world. He is friendly, enthusiastic and seemingly unaffected by the success of his business and the renown it has brought him.

Oddly however, his boyish film star looks are far less familiar to Second Life users than his spiky-haired, moustachioed alter ego – an avatar called Philip Linden.
