EU pushes for payments system end-date

There are “strong arguments” for giving European banks a firm date by which they would have to implement a pan-European electronic banking system, a top European Union official said on Tuesday.

Charlie McCreevy, the internal market commissioner, said he believed “there are strong economic and societal arguments in favour of setting an end-date” by which banks would have to implement the so-called “single euro payments area” (Sepa) project”.
