Tokyo pushes through laws to instil patriotism

The Japanese government yesterday overrode strong parliamentary opposition to push through laws that will allow sweeping changes to the education system and an upgrade of the defence agency to ministry status.

The twin bills are central to the aim of Shinzo Abe, the new prime minister, to instil a greater sense of patriotism in Japanese youth and to "normalise" a military that has been hamstrung by its postwar pacifist constitution.
