Unions accuse Brown of gagging dissent

Gordon Brown was accused by unions on Wednesday of using strong-arm tactics to block criticism of the government's health reforms as Labour suffered an embarrassing defeat on the issue.

While Mr Brown's intervention angered the health unions, it was widely seen as fresh evidence of his determination to keep Labour on the political centreground.
