WTO probes EU-Ecuador banana dispute

Ecuador on Tuesday secured a World Trade Organisation panel investigation into the European Union’s banana tariffs, the latest twist in a decade-old dispute pitting Latin American banana producers against growers in Africa and the Caribbean.

The EU introduced a new system of banana tariffs in January 2006 following a succession of WTO rulings that its previous, quota-based banana import regime was illegal.
