A small Russian submarine was freed and its seven crew members saved by an unmanned British rescue vehicle after being trapped for three days deep in the Pacific ocean with dwindling oxygen supplies.

Vladimir Putin, Russian president, kept low profile during the incident, but has charged his defence minister Sergei Ivanov with investigating its causes. Mr Ivanov flew to the scene of the accident and oversaw the rescue operation, which involved both British and American navy.
