Royal Dutch Shell, the Anglo-Dutch energy group, confirmed on Friday that it was in talks to sell three European refineries to Essar, the Indian conglomerate.

Essar bid for the European refineries in August, and the group, which spans mobile phones, steel, shipping and energy, is now understood to have beaten off several suitors from the US and the Middle East to be in bilateral negotiations.
