Olmert rules out peace deal before end of year

Ehud Olmert, the Israeli prime minister, yesterday acknowledged for the first time that it was "unrealistic" to expect a comprehensive Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement by the end of the year, writes Tobias Buck in Jerusalem.

The admission confirmed widespread concern over the lack of progress in the current round of Middle East peace talks.
