Austria favours co-ordinated expansion steps

The economic fortunes of Austria, previously a staging post into former Communist eastern Europe, have long been linked to those of its neighbours. But with recessionary winds blowing across all parts of the continent, the country looks especially exposed.

To the north, Germany faces a possible deep and protracted recession; in eastern Europe, previously rapidly growing trading partners where Austrian banks have invested heavily, markets are also slowing dramatically.
