UK retail sales show surprise rise in July

UK retail sales bounced back in July, recording a 0.8 per cent month-on-month rise, defying expectations of a slight drop, figures from the Office of National Statistics show.

However, the previous sharp drop in June was revised downward further to 4.3 per cent, leading to a somewhat puzzling picture of consumer demand that stops and starts and appears generally at odds with other economic trends.
