Politicians blame each other for Italy’s gloom

Just as Italy’s election campaign gets off the ground, the economy is bumping along the bottom again.

With poverty and pessimism growing in equal measure, debate is focused less on what to do about it than who is responsible. Is it the centre-left government of Romano Prodi, cut short after 20 months in office, or Silvio Berlusconi, who was in office for the preceding five years?
