Xstrata closes Falcondo nickel operation

Falling nickel prices and high energy costs have forced Xstrata, the Switzerland-based mining group, to shut down a ferronickel mining and processing operation in the Dominican Republic until market conditions improve.

Xstrata’s Falconbridge Dominicana (Falcondo) operation produces 29,000 tonnes of nickel a year or 2 per cent of the world’s primary nickel supply.
