In the minute or so that it will take to read this note the US Treasury will have paid out $1m in gross interest on the federal debt. That sounds like a lot, but it is less of a burden than in past years, at least in relative terms. Net interest as a percentage of federal spending was 9 per cent in fiscal 2008, falling to below 6 per cent in 2009, about the same level as in 1968.
