Judging from the warm welcome he receives from the staff at Giovanni’s, his local Italian restaurant, it appears Paul Caplin is a minor celebrity in this corner of the City of London.

Mr Caplin takes it all in his stride – the offices of Caplin Systems, his financial services software company, are across the road in Finsbury Square, he explains, and he eats at Giovanni’s “at least once or twice a month”.
