The Dow Jones Industrial Average briefly rose above its all-time closing high on Thursday, shaking off further signs of a US economic slowdown.

The US Commerce Department said that growth in gross domestic product slowed from an annualised 5.6 per cent in the first quarter of 2006 to 2.6 per cent in the second quarter, comfortably below the 2.9 per cent previously estimated.
