Surprise choice for FA chairman

A government minister and former Labour party general secretary has emerged as the surprise choice to be the first independent chairman of the Football Association, after the FA failed to woo high-profile business figures.

A host of names from business and politics were linked to the job after Lord Burns recommended the appointment of someone from outside the game to speed up decision-making and help to end the factionalism that has disfigured the FA.
