Hundreds of people left with birth defects caused by the morning sickness drug thalidomide have launched fresh demands for government compensation, 50 years after the authorities approved its launch in the UK.

Thalidomide activists in London added Sir Harold Evans, the veteran campaigning newspaper editor, to a growing list of MPs and other high-profile figures supporting their request for an official apology and public support.
