Long-distance phone consolidation

As appealing as it may be to shore up a rickety balance sheet and shed a dud business in one deft movement, it is not always possible in the best of times and much less so now for America’s long-distance telephone carriers.

Qwest acknowledged as much earlier this week as it announced, after much speculation, that it would not entertain cash bids for its business. Offers were either too low or non- existent.
