Charities gain £300m gift aid extension

Charities welcomed news of a £300m tax bonanza and measures to cut red tape yesterday.

Alistair Darling yesterday said charities could for three years continue to claim gift aid from the government at 22 per cent, even after the standard rate of income tax, on which the aid is based, changes to 20 per cent in April. This will cost the public about £300m, according to Treasury estimates.
