Breakaway fear casts shadow over meeting

Silverstone was hosting its own valediction this weekend with the British Grand Prix scheduled to move to a new venue at Donington next year. But the decision of the Formula One Teams Association to announce a breakaway series has turned it into a general motorsports wake.

The sport has been split down the middle. Silverstone’s paddock on Friday morning was tense, as the implications of the decision to launch a breakaway series sank in and speculation swirled not only over whether the rebel teams would go through with their threat but what response would come from their antagonist, Max Mosley, president of Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile.
