Rivals see unfair advantage on savings

Banks and building societies have complained that the newly nationalised Northern Rock will be able to compete for retail savings for the next three to four years backed by a government guarantee.

Northern Rock, which delivered its business plan to Brussels yesterday, said it planned to repay its £25bn Bank of England loan within three to four years, when it would relinquish its government guarantees.
