Tax cut talk to dominate German election

The German election will be fought on a platform of tax cuts and state handouts despite the insistence of Angela Merkel, chancellor, that Berlin would not spend its way out of the financial crisis.

Details that emerged on Thursday from the country’s two main parties’ election manifestos suggest they will both try to woo voters with the prospect of more cash.
