New industries: More than eds and meds

On the waterfront of the Monongahela River, what was once US Steel’s Homestead Works is now home to a vibrant complex of shops, restaurants and entertainment facilities. The message is clear: Pittsburgh has moved on. However, some new industries owe much to the city’s industrial roots.

In the late 1980s and 1990s, as steel manufacturing jobs declined, the healthcare and services sectors started to fill the gaps. With education and life sciences now significant sources of employment, Pittsburgh has a more diversified economy than two decades ago.
