Focus stays on US interest rates after inflation figures

A relatively benign set of US inflation figures provided only a temporary boost for equity markets on Thursday as investors continued to weigh up the chances of the Federal Reserve taking a break from raising interest rates.

Headline consumer prices rose by 0.5 per cent last month, in line with forecasts. But after stripping out energy and food prices, the core CPI rose by just 0.1 per cent in August, less than analysts had expected.
