Tony Ball, the former chief executive of BSkyB, is back in the spotlight in ITV’s hunt for a new chief executive.

The withdrawal of Simon Fox, chief executive of HMV and the preferred choice of the struggling broadcaster’s board, has thrust Mr Ball to the forefront again, people familiar with the process said last night.
