Brown and Merkel strengthen ties

Gordon Brown and Angela Merkel, his German counterpart, on Wednesday sought to establish a new partnership after a series of changes that have altered the political map of Europe.

At a meeting in Downing Street, followed by a joint trip to Wembley to watch Germany beat England 2-1 in a football friendly, the two leaders sounded each other out over what officials said would be wide-ranging talks.
