Kenya struggles to escape its land trap

Gacheru Kirie, a 90-year-old farmer, sitting in the shade of a wall, jabs a finger into a patch of sunlit soil.

Some 250km away in Kenya’s Rift Valley province he has abandoned a 12-acre plot of land. To symbolise it as an island in hostile waters, he scrapes the shape of an oval into the orange earth.
